U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday said that Poland is taking a "significant" responsibility in the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, adding that NATO countries should help lessen the burden.

He also told his Polish counterpart, President Andrzej Duda, that he viewed NATO's Article 5 guarantee of mutual defence between member states as a "sacred" commitment.

Duda thanked Biden for supporting his country and deploying troops, saying Poles knew the meaning of "Russian imperialism" and attacks by its military.

Biden also visited Ukrainian refugees and volunteers helping them at a reception centre set up in Poland's National Stadium in Warsaw during his visit to the country.
