The NATO flag was raised outside of Swedish parliament in a ceremony that leaders of the long-standing neutral nation hailed as a "new era."

Sweden formally joined the North Atlantic Alliance on March 7, ending decades of post-World War II neutrality and centuries of broader non-alignment with major powers as security concerns in Europe have spiked following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
