NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory team discussed on Monday the hard work behind the historic achievement of having the first-ever chopper flying over Mars.

The project manager MiMi Aung said although it might look easy to fly a chopper for 40 seconds, but the planning and overcoming hurdles took the team some seven years to get to this historic moment.

One of the main challenges was making the chopper very light, to be able to fly in Mars' thin air.

NASA says the entire flight was autonomous, with onboard systems and algorithms doing all the work.

The project came with a big price tag of $85 million. It arrived on the planet’s surface in February with NASA's Perseverance rover.

NASA released photos and videos of the tiny Ingenuity aircraft hovering above the Martian surface on Monday morning, some 118 years after the first human-made aircraft flew on our own planet.

The robot rotorcraft was programmed to ascend 10 feet (three meters) straight up, then hover and rotate in place over the Martian surface for half a minute before settling back down on its four legs.
