NASA’s ingenuity mission is living up to its name after the successful launch of the first-ever helicopter to fly on Mars.

The tiny rotocopter ascended about three metres into the air and hovered in place for 30 seconds above Mars’ Jezero Crater, according to NASA.

The test flight is a major win for human exploration of Mars, which until now has been limited to ground-based vehicles on the red planet’s surface.
