Pope Francis urged dialogue on Sunday from both sides of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia to end the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.

''I renew my call for dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia, hoping that talks between the parties, with the support of the international community, will foster a lasting agreement that will bring an end to the humanitarian crisis," the pope said, praying for the displaced people.

More than 100,000 refugees have arrived in Armenia since Azerbaijan's military operation to retake control of Nagorno-Karabakh, the United Nations said, while thousands more endured long hours of delay in a huge traffic jam at the border.

The 86-year-old pontiff also prayed for the month-long major meeting in the Vatican, known as a synod, that could chart the Church's future, starting on Oct. 4.
