Grieving mothers were blamed for their loss, their concerns were dismissed and some babies were treated so brutally they died.
But today's review is just the start of the inquiry and only looks at 250 cases.
The full inquiry will look at more than 1,800, and will be the largest clinical review the NHS has ever done into one service.
Its chair, Donna Ockenden, has called for urgent and immediate changes in maternity services across the country.
