Hussein Haridi, a former Egyptian assistant foreign minister, says there is a degree of momentum for a potential truce – but an announcement might not be imminent.
“Maybe it’s a bit early to expect a final agreement soon,” he told Al Jazeera, noting that Hamas’s reported counterproposal included “maximalist positions”.
Haridi stressed that Israel would most certainly try to “water down some elements in the Hamas counterproposal”.
“We don’t expect that Israel will say yes to everything,” he said.
Commenting on Blinken’s visit to Israel, Haridi expressed the belief that the US secretary of state “will try to work something out” during his high-level meetings with Israeli officials.
“But definitely, there’s something certain now – the US administration is keen for a humanitarian pause in Gaza as soon as possible.”
