U.S. officials pledged their continued support in Mississippi on Sunday after powerful tornadoes tore through the state on Friday, destroying homes and leaving at least 20 people dead.

“What we’ve seen over the last 36 hours in Mississippi, on the one hand, has been heartbreaking to see the loss and devastation of these communities. But on the other hand, has been inspiring and gives me great reason for optimism,” said Gov. Tate Reeves about how the tragedy has brought the community together.

Early on Sunday, President Joe Biden issued an emergency declaration for Mississippi, making federal funding available to the areas hardest hit by the deadly tornado that ripped through the Mississippi Delta, one of the poorest regions of the U.S.

The town of Rolling Fork in western Mississippi is one of those hardest-hit areas. The town’s mayor, who is also the local funeral director, said he lost personal friends when the tornado ripped through the town and that he is now having to “meet families, those who have lost loved one and help them make it through.”
