An Indiana motorist who was trapped in his overturned pickup truck for six days was rescued on Tuesday after two men spotted the wreckage under a highway bridge while they were fishing.

Mario Garcia and his son-in-law Nivardo Delatorre first thought the man, identified as 27-year-old Matthew Reum, might be deceased when they stumbled on his vehicle. But according to Garcia, “the moment” he touched Reum’s shoulder, Reum swung around and woke up.

"His vehicle missed that guardrail, so he’s driving on the grass shoulder for a good length of time before he goes airborne, down into the creek where he rolls probably several times,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield said. “Quite frankly, it’s a miracle that he’s alive."

Police said Reum survived in part by drinking rainwater. Authorities said Reum was airlifted to a hospital in South Bend with life-threatening injuries after being freed from the wreckage and remained in critical condition on Wednesday morning.
