An overnight fire in a Milan, Italy retirement home killed six people and injured around 80, including three who are in critical condition, Italian authorities said on Friday.

Officials believe the fire started in a first-floor room of two residents who are among the dead, and was contained quickly before spreading to the rest of the building. A vast quantity of toxic fumes was still produced, hospitalizing the surviving residents.

"The most important thing was the evacuation of the people on the first floor and a detailed check of the upper floors," an official of Milan Fire Brigade, Carlo Cardinali, said.

Firefighters' spokesman Luca Cari said separately that the cause of the fire was under investigation, but added that it was likely accidental.
