A bus crash that resulted in a fatal fire killed 25 people and injured eight in Maharashtra, India on Saturday, according to officials.

Local police said that the passenger bus crashed into a road divider in the early hours of July 1, causing significant damage to the vehicle’s fuel tank, causing a fire and trapping the passengers — only a fraction of which made it out alive.

Police Superintendent Sunil Kadasane said though eight people managed to escape the bus, 25 had died, further claiming that the deaths were more a result of the fire than the crash itself.

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on Twitter, saying he would provide support to each of the victim's families, amounting to 700,000 Indian rupees (approx. $11.295 CAD).
