Each year, thousands of migrants die crossing the Mediterranean Sea trying to enter Europe, largely through unofficial channels.

The inherent danger to migrants making this trip on overpacked and structurally unsound boats is compounded by policies from the Libyan and Italian governments — that’s according to reporting by Ian Urbina of the Outlaw Ocean project, who said "the bottom of the Mediterranean is a graveyard."

The PBS NewsHour's Nicole Ellis spoke with Urbina and Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders' search and rescue representative, Juan Matias Gil, about the harrowing journey many migrants face.
