Hundreds of migrants remain stranded on the Belarusian-Polish border for the third day, with children and babies sleeping in tents amid freezing temperatures.

Coming from the Middle East, Africa and Asia, the migrants were repeatedly denied entry to the European Union by Polish guards, and were faced with violence.

The EU's 27 ambassadors are set to agree on Wednesday that the growing numbers of migrants flying to Belarus to reach the EU border amount to "hybrid warfare" by President Alexander Lukashenko - a legal basis for new sanctions.

The EU accuses Belarus of encouraging the migrants to try to illegally cross the frontier as a form of revenge for earlier sanctions imposed on Minsk for prior human rights abuses.

Humanitarian groups accuse Poland's ruling nationalists of violating the international right to asylum by pushing the migrants back into Belarus instead of accepting their applications for protection. Poland says its actions are legal.
