Migrants clash with police at Poland’s border with Belarus

Poland has accused Belarus of trying to spark a major confrontation as hundreds of migrants were seen walking towards the Polish border, with some trying to breach the fence.

Warsaw said on Monday it has deployed additional soldiers and border guards to the border, while the European Union (EU), to which Poland is a member, accuses Minsk of encouraging migrants from the Middle East and Africa to cross into the EU via Belarus as revenge for western sanctions on President Alexander Lukashenko’s government.

Belarus confirms many refugees have moved toward the Polish border, but accuses its neighbour of taking an “inhumane attitude.”

The EU, the United States and Britain imposed sanctions on Belarus after Lukashenko unleashed a violent crackdown on mass protests following a disputed election last year.
