Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano intensified its fiery activity on Friday, putting residents in ash-covered towns in the state of Puebla on high alert.
"People are afraid of those situations (release of materials or eruptions) but first of all, as we have been told, we have to be calm and alert,” said Rene Lopez Xoletl, resident of San Nicolas de los Ranchos.
"Maybe he [volcano] is also upset that they didn't bring him his offering, every year, on March 12, they bring him his 'molito' (Mexican dish)," another resident suggested.
Popocatepetl, meaning "Smoking Hill" in the native Aztec language Nahuatl, is one of the world's most closely monitored volcanoes.
