The theme of this year’s black-tie Met Gala extravaganza is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” which will “examine the life” of the late designer’s legacy. The gala will also pay homage to Lagerfeld through its dress code: “In honour of Karl.” Pieces from the famed Haute-couture designer make up this year’s exhibit for the museum’s Costume Institute.
“Karl said things that were very funny, very poignant, very insightful, but also very hurtful and controversial, which we don't support, obviously. But I wanted to sort of focus on Karl the designer. And I want people to get to know him through his work. I think the vulnerabilities and the contradictions within Karl are there in his work,” said Andrew Bolton, the head curator of The Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Met.
The tradition is every year a number of designers and celebrities are selected to co-chair the event alongside Wintour. This year’s co-chairs are: Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz and Roger Federer. A few stars have confirmed that they’re attending, such as Florence Pugh, Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, while Blake Lively said that she won’t be attending but “will be watching."
Born in Hamburg in 1933, Lagerfeld made his debut with designer Pierre Balmain as an apprentice before moving on to Patou and Chloe and then Fendi. It was after he joined French fashion house Chanel in 1983 that Lagerfeld gained rock-star status, credited with helping jazz up the label founded by Coco Chanel in 1910 and attracting younger clients.
