Police and demonstrators clashed, often violently, in several cities around the world on Sunday, as May Day celebrations - and protests - were held across the globe.

In the French capital: police fired tear gas to push back black-clad anarchists who ransacked businesses as protests were held against the policies of French President Emmanuel Macron.
Turkish riot police detained dozens of protesters trying to reach Istanbul’s main Taksim Square.
And in Berlin, police detained 11 people when scuffles broke out following a largely peaceful protest.
Finally, in Chile, police fired water cannons and tear gas at protesters who threw stones and Molotov cocktails at police in the capital.

May Day is a global day of celebration, awareness, and protests held worldwide each year on May 1. It began in the 19th century as a day to advocate for organized labour and the issues of the working class.
