Hawaiian Gov. Josh Green addressed the state on Wednesday afternoon, announcing that the number of victims who died in the devastating Maui wildfires has reached 110 people.
Though he did not identify victims out of respect for local residents, Maui County Police Chief John Pelletier confirmed children are among the victims.
"Have we found remains that are maybe smaller than other remains? I'm not going to sit here and sensationalize that. But the answer to that is yes... what I'm talking about is children," Pelletier said, addressing a reporter questioning how the death toll is reported and updated.
"We have to identify (the families) and then notify them (first)," he added.
Additionally, Green confirmed that 38 per cent of the impacted territory has been covered by search crews, and that 40 dogs are part of the mass search for missing residents.
The devastating wildfires have resulted in the loss of power, evacuations and rehoming of thousands of residents and visitors. Despite concerns of foul play sparked by social media posts, officials said a criminal investigation is not ongoing.
