U.S. President Joe Biden has approved a disaster declaration in the wake of the deadly fires in Hawaii, he announced during an event in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Thursday. Biden said that all major federal resources will be available to help the people and impacted areas recover.

At least 36 people are confirmed dead following fast-moving fires that destroyed massive sections of the town of Lahaina. More than 270 structures are gone and the area decimated following those fires, which spread due to winds from a hurricane that passed to the south of the islands.

“Anyone who's lost a loved one or who's home has been damaged or destroyed is going to get help immediately. And I've directed that we surge support to these brave firefighters, first responders and emergency personnel working around the clock there and risking their lives,” Biden said.

The White House says in addition to the help, the declaration will allow for the distribution of grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses.
