Matt Hancock announces more areas of England to enter tier 4 as another Covid variant is detected

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced more areas of the south and south east of England will enter tier 4 Covid restrictions from Boxing Day. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

Sussex, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Waverly in Surrey, Hampshire, excluding New Forest and parts of Essex currently not in tier four will all enter the highest tier on 26 December.

Some areas will also move into tier 3, including Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset - but not North Somerset.

He added another variant of the coronavirus has been identified in two patients who had recently travelled from South Africa.

The health secretary said both cases and close contacts of the cases have been quarantined.

He also announced immediate restrictions on travel from South Africa.
