In 1981, five men from California became the first known patients of an unknown illness that would later be identified as HIV/AIDS.

Four decades later, there's still no cure or vaccine for the virus that's killed more than 33-million people worldwide.

When the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, medical teams around the world shifted focus to battling the novel coronavirus.

While the pandemic derailed HIV/AIDS research and treatment, the COVID-19 vaccine maker Moderna is beginning work on a new treatment for the decades-old disease. Jennifer Johnson reports.
