The transitional government in Mali says elections, scheduled for next month, need to be postponed by up to five years.
Opposition leaders say the decision by the transitional government is unacceptable.
West Africa's regional alliance, ECOWAS, is expected to discuss the situation next week.
ECOWAS has already promised more sanctions on Malian officials if there are more delays to the democratic transition.

Al Jazeera’s Victoria Gatenby reports.
