Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has received a warm welcome in Mali as the West African nation seeks military help for its fight against armed groups linked to ISIL and al-Qaeda. Moscow is seen as a better alternative to France, whose forces on the ground have so far failed to bring stability to the region.
