White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre spoke on Tuesday about how the U.S. would continue its response to actions by Iran taken on Iranians amid the ongoing protests and outcry that have resulted from the death of Mahsa Amini, saying they would "impose further costs" on the regime.

"We believe that the Iranian people, women in particular, have the rights to their freedoms and we're going to speak out about that," she said. "You all are reporting this, you all are seeing yourselves what is happening on the ground, and so we're going to continue to impose further costs on the perpetrators of this violence."

She reiterated what has also been said by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and President Joe Biden that they stand with the people of Iran "who are inspiring the world with their bravery." She said women and men should have the freedom of expression and assembly in Iran, and Iran must "end its use of violence against its own citizens simply for exercising their fundamental freedoms, their fundamental rights."
