Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who died in morality police custody in September 2022, and the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement in Iran were symbolically awarded the European Union Parliament's Sakharov rights prize at a ceremony in Strasbourg, France on Tuesday.

Two Iranian activists, Afsoon Najafi and Mersedeh Shahinkar, as well as the lawyer of Amini’s family, Saleh Nikbakht, accepted the prize on Amini’s behalf.

The Iran-focused activist news outlet HRANA reported on Saturday that Iranian authorities prevented Amini’s father, mother and brother from flying to France to attend the ceremony and confiscated their passports. It did not provide further details.

Iran’s representative to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the family being prevented from travelling.

Jina Mahsa Amini died after being arrested for allegedly flouting the Islamic Republic's mandatory dress code. Her death sparked months of protests that spiralled into some of the worst political turmoil since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
