University students across Iran staged protests marking the 40-day mark of Mahsa Amini's death on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman died on Sept. 16 after falling into a coma while in the custody of Iran’s so-called morality police, where she was held for apparently not wearing her hijab properly according to the rigidly enforced Islamic Penal Code.
Students at Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology in Tehran held a vigil for Amini, where they sang and lit candles. As well, students at Rafsanjani University Complex clapped and chanted in protest.
Plus, students at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad's Faculty of Engineering chanted: "Death to this velayat, all these years of crime." Velayat-e faqih is said to be a Shia Islamist system of governance that justifies the rule of the clergy over the state.
At Alzahra University, students chanted "I am a free woman, you are a whore," to mean "men are immoral, not women," as part of an ongoing protest.
