Lawmakers from Turkey's ruling AK Party and the pro-Kurdish DEM Party clashed in parliament over the detention and replacement of a DEM Party mayor in southeast Turkey, due to alleged militant links.

The tension escalated as DEM lawmakers protested the detention, resulting in a physical altercation and the closure of the general assembly for the day.

Meanwhile, police scuffled with dozens of people in Hakkari who wanted to protest against Ankara's decision, firing water cannons to disperse the crowd, using force to push them back and detaining some of them.

The move was seen as a continuation of President Tayyip Erdogan's government's policy in previous years in which it removed elected mayors from the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, accusing them of terrorism-related charges.
