Chaos erupted in Democratic Republic of Congo’s Parliament on Tuesday as lawmakers brawled over news that President Felix Tshisekedi plans to end an alliance with his predecessor Joseph Kabila.

Lawmakers threw buckets and chair in the brawl and at least one man was carried away bleeding from his head.

Tshisekedi has been governing in a coalition with Kabila allies since his disputed election victory in 2018, when he won the presidency but Kabila’s allies won a majority in Parliament.

Frustrated by his inability to push through his agenda, Tshisekedi announced Sunday he would disband the coalition – a move that Kabila allies say would be illegal.

The president says he wants to try to form a new majority and, if unsuccessful, will call for new parliamentary elections.
