Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed his anger on Sunday after he claimed the U.S. had not issued visas to journalists seeking to accompany him to the United Nations (UN), with Russian officials vowing to retaliate against U.S. journalists in Russia.

“This country — which calls itself the strongest, the smartest, the freest, the most just — chickened out. It did a really stupid thing, I'm convinced. It also showed the real worth of its oaths about protecting freedom of speech, free information access and so on," said Lavrov, who began chairing several UN Security Council meetings starting on Monday in New York City, as Russia assumes the rotating presidency of the council.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also cautioned that the world is facing “unprecedented and interlocking crises.” He added that “tensions between major powers are at a historic high, so are the risks of conflict through misadventure or miscalculation.”

The U.S. State Department did not immediately comment on the claim of the visa denials, saying it could not speak on specific visa requests because of privacy rules.
