U.K. lawmakers across opposition parties on Friday called for a general election to be held after Prime Minister Liz Truss fired her finance minister and scrapped parts of her economic plan in a bid to stay in power.

Scottish National Party Leader Nicola Sturgeon said Truss was "out of her depth" and called her a "lame duck prime minister," calling on Conservative backbenchers to push Truss to send U.K. residents to the polls.

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey also said Truss had "trashed the British economy," with the British pound dropping in value amid controversies over proposed tax cuts.

Were an election to take place, the Tories could see themselves ousted from office based on recent polls that show Labour with 20 to 30 per cent support over the Conservatives.
