Two key by-elections saw Labour overturn huge Conservative majorities. In Tamworth, the Tories were defending a 19,600 majority, but a 23.9 percentage point swing to Labour saw that eradicated. Mid Bedfordshire saw the largest numeric Tory majority overturned by Labour at a by-election since 1945.

Labour shadow transport secretary Louise Haigh told Sophy Ridge the swing in the Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire's by-elections "demonstrates the scale of anger in the country" on the Tories' handling of the economy and public services
