La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent exploded again on Tuesday, launching ash and debris kilometres up into the atmosphere, and sending hot ash clouds across the Caribbean.

Since the first eruption on Friday, thousands of people living in communities close to the volcano have been evacuated, due to the threat of pyroclastic flows — fast-moving waves of solidified lava, volcanic ash and gas — that poured down the south and southwest sides of the peak.

The current eruption is expected to last days or weeks. Parts of nearby island Barbados, to the east of St. Vincent, are also blanketed in volcanic ash and clean-up is expected to last weeks.

Coincidentally, Tuesday also marked the anniversary of another eruption in St. Vincent, that one over 40 years ago back in 1979.
