As blocks of lava tumbled down the Cumbre Vieja volcano — some as big as a house — red-hot lava streams hardened and caked over the village of La Laguna in Los Llanos de Aridane on Thursday on Spain's La Palma island.

Residents of La Laguna were evacuated Wednesday evening as the lava stream became dangerously close.

Since the first eruption began on Sept.19, rivers of red-hot lava have engulfed almost 800 hectares of land, destroying about 2,000 buildings and many banana plantations.

More than 6,000 people have had to leave their homes.
