Authorities in La Palma, Spain announced Monday new lockdowns were being put in place as lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano engulfed a cement factory, among other buildings, creating a huge cloud of smoke.

Officials said they would analyze air quality to monitor if it's dangerous for the population, with Miguel Angel Morcuende of the Pevolca response committee saying it was preferred to lockdown to avoid any health problems.

The committee also said it was monitoring a new flow of lava that is 300 metres away from the ocean.

The Spanish Institute of Geology and Mining also shot video on Saturday of massive blocks of lava flowing down the hillside, with some the size of three-storey buildings.

The volcano has destroyed nearly 1,200 buildings and forced the evacuation of about 6,000 people since it started erupting Sept. 19.
