Hundreds of protesters from New York to California held rallies on Friday to demonstrate against the verdict of a jury that acquitted teenager Kyle Rittenhouse of murder in the fatal shooting of two men during racial justice protests in Kenosha, Wisc. last year.

Rittenhouse shot and killed Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and fired a bullet that tore a chunk off the arm of Gaige Grosskreutz, 28. Rittenhouse claimed self-defence.

A jury acquitted him of murder in the fatal shooting of Huber and Rosenbaum during racial justice protests in a decision that ignited fierce debate about gun rights and the boundaries of self-defence in the United States.

The girlfriend of Anthony Huber, one of the two men shot dead by Rittenhouse, said she was "heartbroken" by his acquittal on Friday.

Amid a heavy law enforcement presence, several dozen protesters lined the steps outside the courthouse after the verdict was read, some carrying placards supporting Rittenhouse and others expressing disappointment.
