Kyle Rittenhouse, who shot and killed two men and injured another during Black Lives Matter protests in Kenosha, Wisc. last year, was acquitted by a jury on Friday.
Rittenhouse’s defence attorney Mark Richards told reporters outside the courthouse that he was “very happy” with the verdict, adding that the defense team decided to have Rittenhouse testify after they tested two versions of their case before mock juries, one with him testifying and one without.
Both sides wrapped up closing arguments on Monday in a polarizing trial, which garnered national and international attention over the issues of gun violence, vigilantism and second-amendment rights. The jury came to a verdict on Friday afternoon.
Amid a heavy law enforcement presence, several dozen protesters lined the steps outside the courthouse after the verdict was read, some carrying placards in support of Rittenhouse and others expressing disappointment.
Rittenhouse, then 17 years old, traveled to Kenosha on Aug. 25, 2020, his lawyer said, to protect property from racial justice protests that began following the death of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot by a white Kenosha police officer on Aug. 23. Rittenhouse and all the victims were white.
