The King and Queen welcomed the Emperor and Empress of Japan as part of a state visit, which was previously postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A Japanese foreign ministry official said the couple's visit would not be a political one and was hoped would forge "friendly relations across generations" between Japan's imperial family and the British royal family.
