A survivor of a cult in eastern Kenya is sharing her story after at least 100 of its members were found in shallow graves or have since been reported dead.

Shamim Kadzo Vidza said members were not forced but joined of their own “free will.” She said she joined because she had accepted Jesus as her saviour.

“Everyone has free will to attend whatever church they want, whether you go to Ezekiel’s church or wherever. No one gets promised anything, you go as a normal congregant and I was one,” she said.

Survivors of the so-called Good News International Church have said the leader, Patrick Mackenzie, had told them the world would end on April 15 and that they could go to heaven if they starved themselves.

A former church member said he was “horrified” by news of the deaths and believed he could have been among them if he had not left the cult when he did.

The deaths amount to one of the worst cult-related tragedies in recent history and the toll is expected to further rise as the Kenyan Red Cross says more than 300 people have been reported missing.
