At least 90 followers of the Good News International Church in Kenya have died, thought to have starved themselves to death in the hope of going to heaven. Authorities exhumed 82 bodies from shallow graves since last Friday, while eight cult members were found alive but later died.

Cult leader and pastor Paul Mackenzie, who is currently in police custody, had told his followers the world would end on April 15 and instructed them to starve themselves to be the first to go to heaven, a relative of cult members and hospital staff told reporters on Wednesday.

Kenyan President William Ruto condemned the priest at the centre of the deadly starvation cult: "Terrorists use religion to advance their heinous acts. People like Mr. Mackenzie are using religion to do exactly the same thing."
