Britain's new Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised on Monday to get a better deal with the European Union (EU) on post-Brexit trading rules, saying former prime minister Boris Johnson a "botched" the deal.

Speaking to journalists in Belfast, as part of a tour of the four nations of the United Kingdom, Starmer highlighted that improving the U.K.'s relationship with the EU would require a commitment to uphold existing agreements.

"We're not going to be able to get a better relationship unless we demonstrate a commitment to the relationship of the agreements that have already been put in place," Starmer said.

He added that his government now has a "very strong mandate for change, for a different relationship with the EU, a different way of doing politics."
