July 5, 2022: Rooftop shooter kills six in Highland Park, Cops shot at Philadelphia concert, Ukraine’s Donetsk, Italian glacier collapses, Protests at justices' homes

1. A gunman perched on a rooftop opened fire on families waving flags and children riding bikes at a Fourth of July parade on Monday, killing six and wounding more than 36 in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park.

2. Two Philadelphia police officers were shot near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway late on Monday as thousands of people celebrated a Fourth of July concert and fireworks show with the crowd scattering in panic when shots were fired.

3. Russian forces struck targets across Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region on Tuesday to prepare the path for an expected armored thrust to try to take more territory as the five-month-old war entered a new phase.

4. Rescue teams resumed the search on Tuesday for 13 climbers who were missing after part of a glacier gave way high in the Italian Alps on Sunday, killing at least seven people.

5. The U.S. Supreme Court’s top security officer has asked Maryland Governor Larry Hogan to enforce laws barring picketing outside the Maryland homes of high court justices, saying protests and “threatening activity” have increased.
