1. U.S. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said he has reached a deal with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer on a bill to increase corporate taxes, reduce the national debt, invest in energy technologies and lower the cost of prescription drugs.

2. U.S. President Joe Biden and China's Xi Jinping began their fifth call as leaders, as concerns mounted over a possible visit to Chinese-claimed Taiwan by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

3. Ukraine stepped up its drive to retake the Russian-controlled south of the country by trying to bomb and isolate Russian troops in hard-to-resupply areas, but said it saw evidence that Moscow was redeploying its forces to defend the territory.

4. The United States has made "a substantial offer" to Russia to release U.S. citizens detained there, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday, adding he would press his Russian counterpart to respond in a conversation planned for the coming days.

5. Two former Minneapolis police officers were sentenced on federal charges stemming from the murder of George Floyd, the Black man who was killed when their colleague Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck during an arrest.
