Judge Schroeder, the judge in the Kyle Rittenhouse case, is a well-known pillar in the community and is the longest-serving circuit court judge in Wisconsin. “There’s a lot of people who grew up with him, who went to school with him, know knew this kind of behavior and are almost desensitized to it,” said Troy McDonald, who is a reporter in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The role of a judge and in this specific case, the at times off color remarks by the judge captured attention during the Rittenhouse trial. “Judges run their courtrooms like little fiefdoms," said Vera Institute of Justice's Insha Rahman. McDonald and Rahman spoke with PBS NewsHour's Nicole Ellis on Nov. 19 right after Rittenhouse was found not guilty of all the charges against him.
