Residents in China are continuing to protest the country's strict zero-COVID measures — including in Jinan, where residents were seen trying to break out of lockdowns and scuffling with police in hazmat suits on Tuesday.
Video obtained by Reuters shows residents in Jinan, Shandong, chanting “lift lockdown” while pushing barricades in confrontation with the police in Lixia District in the city.
Chinese authorities have begun inquiries into some of the people who gathered at weekend protests against COVID-19 curbs, Reuters was told by people at the Beijing demonstrations, while the police presence on the city's streets remained strong.
The wave of civil disobedience is unprecedented in mainland China since President Xi Jinping assumed power a decade ago, as frustration mounts over his signature zero-COVID policy nearly three years into the pandemic. The COVID-19 measures are also exacting a heavy toll on the world's second-largest economy.
The lockdowns have exacerbated one of the sharpest slowdowns in growth China has suffered in decades, disrupting global supply chains and roiling financial markets. Chinese stocks and the yuan rallied as investors bet signs of civil discontent could prompt an easing of the curbs and cheered a relaxation of regulations on developer fundraising.
