Sri Lanka’s civil war lasted nearly 30 years.

Although it ended in 2009, deep wounds are still open.

More than 100,000 people were killed and numerous atrocities and war crimes were committed.

Twelve years on, many say justice has not been served.

A United Nations report warns that "the failure of Sri Lanka to address past violations has significantly heightened the risk of human rights violations being repeated".

Can Sri Lanka ever close the wounds left by years of conflict and human rights violations?

And will justice ever be served?

Sri Lanka’s foreign secretary, Admiral Jayanath Colombage, talks to Al Jazeera.
