Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara and his predecessor Laurent Gbagbo say they want peace after the rivals met for the first time since a deadly 2010-11 conflict.
Gbagbo had refused to concede defeat to Ouattara in the 2010 elections.
About 3,000 people died in violence following the disputed polls.
Gbagbo recently returned to Ivory Coast after the International Criminal Court acquitted him of crimes against humanity.
