Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr was visibly shaken Tuesday evening as he spoke about the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that left at least 21 people — 19 of them students — dead when a gunman began shooting.

"When are we going to do something?" he asked, seated before reporters at a pre-game news conference.

Kerr has been a long-time advocate of gun control and has spoken out about gun violence. In 1984, his father died after being shot during a terrorist attack in Beirut.

He went on to question why action had not taken place on issues such as background checks or other gun control legislation, saying that 90 per cent of Americans were "being held hostage by 50 senators in Washington" who refuse to put H.R. 8 — a bipartisan background check bill — to a vote in the U.S. Senate.

In speaking about inaction by the Senate, with the particular aim being taken apparently at Republican senators, Kerr brought up the shootings at a supermarket in Buffalo, N.Y., and a church in Laguna Woods, Calif., which took place in just the last two weeks, when asking why more still hasn't been done.

According to police, it's believed the gunman acted alone and also reportedly killed his grandmother before driving to the school. Police said the gunman was killed.
