Air strikes in Khan Younis are ongoing. As recently as 20 minutes ago, Israeli planes hit residential buildings in the eastern part of the city, and victims are streaming into already overstretched hospitals.
In return, Palestinian fighters have been launching rockets at Israeli settlements during this round of fighting from the south of the Gaza Strip.
All of this takes place against the backdrop of the return of seasonal rains to Gaza, which has presented a new set of challenges for internally displaced Palestinians.
They are taking refuge in UN schools, but these are badly equipped and offer no shelter from the rain.
Even on days when the weather is fair, they are forced to get up early in order to search for the basic necessities of life, facing new shortages they didn’t expect.
Many did not manage to bring warm clothes because they were only allowed to carry one bag when they evacuated, and others have run out of money, limiting their ability to obtain already scarce resources like food.
