An official with the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) — an Israeli Defence Ministry agency which liaises with Palestinians on civilian affairs — claims that reports of “strikes” on Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital are “a lie.”
“I want to say clearly, this is a lie. There are clashes between IDF troops and Hamas terrorist operatives around the hospital. There is no shooting at the hospital and there is no siege,” Col. Moshe Tetro said on Saturday.
Col. Tetro said despite nearby ground attacks between the forces, the hospital’s east wing remains open for Palestinians to “leave if they want to.” Staff at Shifa, however, claim the hospital is the scene of a “war zone.”
The violence comes after Hamas militants committed on unprecedented attack in south Israel on Oct. 7 — igniting a vow to “destroy” Hamas, five weeks of Israeli attacks in Gaza and thousands of civilian fatalities.
Israel claims Hamas has hidden command centers and tunnels beneath Shifa. The militant group, however, has denied these allegations.
Acknowledging the humanitarian toll, Israel’s chief military spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, said Saturday that the country’s forces will help transfer babies to “a safer hospital.”
