Five Canadians are now dead following a coordinated attack by Hamas on Israeli soil, Global Affairs Canada has confirmed.
Julie Sunday, assistant deputy minister for consular security and emergency management, said during a Saturday briefing that the government continues to “follow up” on the cases of three other missing Canadians.
Sunday said the government is also still working to get up to 300 Canadians and their relatives out of the Gaza Strip as Israel prepares an expected ground offensive. Another 250 Canadians may be able to leave The West Bank by bus next week, she said.
“We called every single individual we had on our list in Gaza, which was close to 50 families, to inform them directly, to be in contact with them,” she said. “But it’s difficult because we know electricity has been failing in the Gaza Strip. And so it’s been difficult to get in touch with people.”
She also cautioned Canadians to avoid travelling to Lebanon, where there have been violent clashes along the border with Israel.
